Mechanism of Polymerization (पॉलिमरीकरण की क्रियाविधि)
🔹 Polymerization Mechanism
🔹 Types of Polymerization Mechanism
- Free Radical Polymerization
- Ionic Polymerization
🔹 Free Radical Polymerization
🔹 Definition of Free Radical Polymerization
"Free Radical Polymerization is a chain polymerization process initiated by free radicals which results in the formation of high molecular weight polymers."
🔹 Free Radical
🔹 Common Initiators
| Initiator | Formula |
|---|---|
| Benzoyl Peroxide | (C₆H₅COO)₂ |
| Hydrogen Peroxide | H₂O₂ |
| Azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) | C₈H₁₂N₄ |
🔹 Steps of Free Radical Polymerization
1. Initiation Step
Initiator → Free Radicals
2. Propagation Step
3. Termination Step
🔹 Free Radical Polymerization Examples
| Monomer | Polymer |
|---|---|
| Ethylene | Polyethylene |
| Vinyl Chloride | PVC |
| Styrene | Polystyrene |
| Methyl Methacrylate | PMMA |
🔹 Advantages of Free Radical Polymerization
- Simple Process
- Low Cost
- High Production Rate
- Large Scale Industrial Use
- Wide Range of Monomers
🔹 Disadvantages of Free Radical Polymerization
- Less Control over Molecular Weight
- Chain Transfer Reactions
- Broad Molecular Weight Distribution
🔹 Ionic Polymerization
🔹 Definition of Ionic Polymerization
"Ionic Polymerization is a polymerization process initiated by ionic species such as cations or anions resulting in polymer formation."
🔹 Types of Ionic Polymerization
- Cationic Polymerization
- Anionic Polymerization
🔹 Cationic Polymerization
Initiators Used
- BF₃
- AlCl₃
- H₂SO₄
Examples
- Isobutylene
- Vinyl Ethers
🔹 Anionic Polymerization
Initiators Used
- n-Butyl Lithium
- Sodium Amide
- Potassium Compounds
Examples
- Styrene
- Butadiene
- Acrylonitrile
🔹 Steps of Ionic Polymerization
- Initiation
- Propagation
- Termination
🔹 Advantages of Ionic Polymerization
- Better Molecular Weight Control
- High Purity Products
- Controlled Polymer Structure
- Living Polymer Formation Possible
🔹 Disadvantages of Ionic Polymerization
- Expensive Process
- Sensitive to Moisture
- Requires Pure Conditions
- Complex Operation
🔹 Comparison Between Free Radical and Ionic Polymerization
| Basis | Free Radical Polymerization | Ionic Polymerization |
|---|---|---|
| Reactive Species | Free Radical | Ion |
| Control | Less | Better |
| Cost | Low | High |
| Reaction Conditions | Simple | Strict |
| Molecular Weight Control | Poor | Excellent |
🔹 Industrial Applications
- Plastic Manufacturing
- PVC Production
- Polyethylene Industry
- Synthetic Rubber Industry
- Fiber Manufacturing
- Engineering Plastics
🔹 Viva Questions
- Free Radical Polymerization
- Initiator
- Ionic Polymerization
- Cationic Polymerization
- Anionic Polymerization
🔹 Exam Oriented Important Questions
- Ionic Polymerization
